Currently, New Jersey is one of 13 states, along with the District of Columbia, that has fully adopted the Next Generation Science Standards for implementation in its schools. Adopted by the State Board of Education in 2014, as the Next Generation Science Standards, they were renamed as the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science (NJSLS-S) in May 2016. Edison’s Middle School curricula are designed to help students foster an understanding of the Scientific domains while incorporating performance expectations from the Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science.
In the beginning of the year students develop and use models and identify patterns in their observations. By the end of the year students are able to analyze and interpret data and construct explanations and design solutions by utilizing scale, proportion and quantity.
The performance expectations in sixth, seventh and eighth grade develop ideas and skills over time that will allow students to explain more complex phenomena in the disciplines as they progress to high school.
